The Montero family, whose illustrious past dates back to the early 1900s, has committed 97% of their territory to the preservation of forests and the cultivation of organic coffee. Third-generation coffee farmer Roberto Montero carries on this tradition by cultivating some of the best shade-grown coffee in the area while giving back to the community. Roberto has created more than 100 full-time jobs, as well as housing and medical care for seasonal pickers, to make Finca La Amistad a flourishing community. There is no other family that represents the history of coffee, sustainability, and community like the Montero’s.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT’s THE SHELF LIFE?

If stored properly, whole coffee beans can last for several months, if not longer. To extend the shelf life of your beans, it is important to store them in an airtight container, away from light and heat, and in a cool, dry place. It is also a good idea to keep the beans in the whole bean form until you are ready to use them, and to grind the beans just before brewing for the best flavor and aroma.

WHY IS SHADE GROWN COFFEE IMPORTANT?

Shade-grown coffee is important for several reasons, including environmental, social, and economic benefits. Here are some of the key reasons why shade-grown coffee is important:

  1. Environmental benefits: Shade-grown coffee farms provide important habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife. The shade trees help to create a more biodiverse ecosystem and protect the soil from erosion. Shade-grown coffee farms also tend to be more sustainable than sun-grown coffee farms because they require fewer inputs, such as pesticides and fertilizers.
  2. Social benefits: Shade-grown coffee farms often support more diverse and sustainable livelihoods for farmers and their families. The shade trees can provide additional sources of income through the sale of fruits, nuts, and timber. Shade-grown coffee farms may also support traditional farming practices and cultural heritage.
  3. Economic benefits: Shade-grown coffee often commands a higher price on the market due to its perceived quality and sustainability. By promoting shade-grown coffee, consumers can support small-scale farmers and promote more sustainable agriculture practices.

In addition to these benefits, shade-grown coffee can also help to mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil and trees. Overall, shade-grown coffee is an important way to support biodiversity, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.

Should I grind my own beans?

If you don't who will? Swing by a shop and we'll be happy to grind them for ya. If at home, we suggest grabbing a grinder from the coffee gear section on the site if you don't have one. Grinding to order ensures that you can enjoy your coffee at it's peak freshness.
